General & Beginner Questions
Do I need to be in shape to start Jiu-Jitsu?
Absolutely not. This is the most common myth keeping people away from the mats. Jiu-Jitsu is exactly how you get into shape. Our beginner classes are structured to allow you to learn at your own pace. As you attend classes regularly, your cardiovascular endurance, core strength, and flexibility will naturally improve.
I have zero martial arts experience. Will I be lost?
Not at all. Our Gracie Barra Fundamentals Program is specifically designed for people with zero previous experience. We break down every technique step-by-step in a cooperative, supportive environment. You will be paired with partners who will help you learn safely, not try to defeat you.
“Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone.” — Master Carlos Gracie Jr.
Preparing for Your First Class
What should I wear and bring to my introductory lesson?
For your very first complimentary trial class, you do not need to own a specific uniform (called a Gi). Here is a quick checklist to help you pack:
| What to Wear / Bring | Details |
| Clothing | Comfortable, form-fitting athletic wear (like a T-shirt and shorts/leggings without zippers). |
| Hydration | A water bottle (we have a filling station at the academy). |
| Footwear | Sandals or flip-flops (easy to slip off before stepping onto the clean mats). |
| Hygiene | Clean gym clothes, trimmed fingernails/toenails, and a positive attitude. |
What happens during a typical beginner class?
A standard 60-minute fundamentals class at our Plaistow facility follows a highly structured, safe format:
Warm-up (10-15 mins): Functional movements like jogging, stretching, and basic solo jiu-jitsu movements to prepare your body.
Technique Instruction (30 mins): The professor or coach demonstrates a self-defense or sport technique, then you practice it with a partner with light resistance.
Specific Training (10-15 mins): Positional practice where you apply the day’s technique with controlled resistance, fully supervised by our staff.
Safety, Injuries, and Age Limits
Is Jiu-Jitsu safe? Will I get hurt?
Safety is our absolute highest priority at Gracie Barra Plaistow. Our instructors are highly certified and strictly enforce a culture of mutual respect and control. Because BJJ does not involve striking (punching or kicking), the risk of major injury is significantly lower than in many other sports. If a technique is applied to you, you simply “tap out” to signal your partner to stop immediately.
Am I too old to start training?
You are never too old to start. We have students who began their Jiu-Jitsu journeys in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s. Jiu-Jitsu relies on leverage, timing, and technique rather than raw athletic youth or brute strength.
Membership & Schedule Details
How many times a week should I train as a beginner?
Ideal Consistency: We recommend starting with 2 to 3 classes per week.
Why? This frequency gives your body plenty of time to recover between sessions while still allowing your brain to retain the techniques you learn.
Can women train at Gracie Barra Plaistow?
Yes, definitely! We have a growing and vibrant community of women training at our academy. Jiu-Jitsu was originally developed as a self-defense system designed to empower a smaller person to successfully defend against a larger attacker, making it an incredibly empowering martial art for women.
Ready to Take the First Step?
